This is a very solid bag, perfect for the university student, or pretty much anyone. The laptop sleeve would fit a 17" machine, my 15.6" fits fine. The laptop sleeve is well built and secure. You can fit plenty of stuff in it (try a full set of calculus and CS textbooks!) and it's still comfortable to wear. The front pockets are great for keeping the miscellaneous keys, notes, cards, electronics, etc. that we all accumulate and carry around with us.
This does come with a removable cross strap for keeping it on your back when on a bike (a very useful feature not found in most cheaper bags). The strap has a clever buckle on the adjustment mechanism that allows you to keep the strap very short (which is most comfortable) without having to readjust it every time you take the bag on and off. The waterproof inner lining keeps your stuff dry when one of New Mexico's ninja thunder storms comes through. The nylon construction is very sturdy and should last quite some time.
Bottom line: if you're looking for a messenger bag, a Timbuk2 is the way to go. They're expensive, but the quality construction and features make it well worth it.
